Exhibiting at SEMA Show Las Vegas: Stand Design Tips for Auto Brands

It is essential to recognize that no amount of preparation can fully prepare one for the sheer size of the SEMA Show Las Vegas floor.

The Las Vegas Convention Centre will host the four most significant commercial days of the global automotive aftermarket calendar from November 3 to 6, 2026, with over 161,000 attendees, 2,400 exhibitors, 3,300 media from over 140 countries, and over 70,000 qualified buyers in attendance. Specialty equipment is a $44.6 billion market and a considerable percentage of the transactions that comprise that figure start on the SEMA Show floor.

For auto brands exhibiting here, the opportunity is enormous. But so is the competition. You are not just competing with your direct rivals — you are competing with 2,400 companies all fighting for the attention of the same buyers at the same time. Your exhibition stand is the most important commercial variable you control. Here is how to make it count.

Know the Show Floor Before You Design Your Stand

The Las Vegas Convention Centre is divided into product categories, with each hall dedicated to a unique industry area. Where your buyers are spending their time at SEMA tells every design decision.

The West Hall is home to trucks, SUVs, and off-road — the most visited area for lift kits, winches, overland gear, and truck accessories. The New Products Showcase in the Lower South Hall is often cited as the most important room at the show — a vital hub for buyers and media scanning the latest innovations. Racing and performance, mobile electronics, restyling and car care, and powersports each have their own dedicated sections.

Give this info to your stand designer from day one. In the West area a booth aimed at the off-road crowd has a totally different visual language and practical structure than one in a different area that targets mobile electronics shoppers.  Generic stand designs fail at SEMA precisely because they ignore this specificity.

Design for Vehicles First — Everything Else Comes Second

SEMA Show Las Vegas is one of the few trade shows in the world where the product on display is often the size of a car. Feature vehicles — custom builds, showcase models, prototype designs — are the centrepiece of the most successful SEMA booths, and the best automotive exhibition stand designs are built around them.

This has specific practical implications. Your stand layout needs to accommodate the vehicle footprint, allow visitors to walk around it, create sight lines from the aisle, and still provide space for product displays, team members, and ideally a private meeting area. Getting that balance right in a 10×20 or 20×20 booth requires deliberate space planning — not a template dropped over your square footage.

Lighting is the single most powerful design tool at SEMA. The Las Vegas Convention Center's halls are large and high-ceilinged — ambient light is not your friend. Directional spotlights on featured vehicles, LED underlighting on display plinths and dynamic backlighting on brand graphics all provide the visual difference from adjacent stands that brings visitors to a halt in the aisle. Make a lighting budget a fundamental design feature, not an afterthought.

Make Your Stand Visible From the Aisle First

The majority of unplanned booth visits at trade shows — and SEMA is full of them — are triggered by something the visitor sees from 8–10 metres away in the aisle. At a show where 161,000 people are moving through multiple halls across four days, your first job is to stop someone from walking past.

The most effective SEMA exhibition stand designs lead with one dominant visual — a hero vehicle elevation, a bold brand graphic, or a dramatic structural element — that communicates the brand's identity before a visitor reads a word of copy. Your logo is secondary. Your brand's visual language is primary.

Height matters at SEMA. The show floor is vast and taller stands — double-decker configurations, high-rise backdrops, elevated vehicle platforms — are visible from further across the hall, giving you a discovery advantage over neighbouring stands that stay at standard height. If your booth allocation and budget allow for it, going vertical at SEMA consistently outperforms going wide.

Plan for the Crowd — Not Just the Stand

Wear your most comfortable shoes: you will walk 5–8 miles a day at the SEMA Show. Your visitors are doing the same. They are making quick decisions about where to spend their limited time, and a stand that is physically difficult to move around narrow entry points, unclear product display zones, no obvious place to start will be skipped regardless of how impressive it looks.

Design your visitor journey deliberately: A clear entry point, a logical progression from brand introduction to product display to meeting space, and an exit that does not create traffic jams these are the functional design decisions that determine whether visitors stay long enough to have a real conversation.

Staff placement matters as much as layout: Team members positioned at the front edge of the stand not gathered in the back around a counter intercept visitors naturally and keep the booth feeling active and accessible.

Brief Your Stand Builder Early

Months of preparation are required to ensure successful attendance at the SEMA Show. Booth placements are improved, logistics are more efficient, and the return on investment is greater for exhibitors who plan in advance. The same is true for your stand designer. For SEMA Show 2026 opening November 3 brief your exhibition stand builder by July 2026 at the latest.

Custom automotive trade show displays require longer lead times than standard trade show booths. Vehicle integration, elevated platforms, custom lighting rigs, and any structural elements above standard height all add design and fabrication time. The earlier your brief, the more creative freedom your designer has and at SEMA, creative freedom is the difference between a stand that gets photographed by 3,300 media representatives and one that gets walked past.
